I first met Sir Alastair Buchan Hepburn in the year 2000 . He was the 7th Baronet. He died in 2022. In a letter of 16th March 2007, he shared the wish that the story of the Hepburns of Smeaton could be researched for a book and that this was also the wish of the late Lord Hailes, Patrick Buchan Hepburn, the younger son of the 4th Baronet. Since then I have written a number of articles on aspects of the Hepburns of Smeaton and curated an Exhibition at the John Gray Centre on the Last of the Hepburns of Smeaton which opened in June 2018 until the pandemic of March 2020. This account of A History of Smeaton Hepburn Estate was first drafted in 2016. It includes references to the late George and Anne Gray whose company Audrey and I enjoyed on many occasions in their home and also walking through the estate that had became part of their lives to.
